New Workshops – Nature Photography Boot Camp & Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour

I’m excited to announce the dates of some great workshops and tours this year, both of which are among my most popular offerings: the Nature Photography Boot Camp and Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour.  Read on for full details!

May 25 & 26 – Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour
June 15 – Nature Photography Boot Camp in Jackson, Wyoming
July 13 – Nature Photography Boot Camp in Moab, Utah
August 10 – Nature Photography Boot Camp in Moab, Utah

This year I’m offering my most popular workshop, the one-day Nature Photography Boot Camp, in two locations – Moab, Utah and Jackson, Wyoming.  In Moab we’ll visit Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, where we’ll spend ample time working in small groups to learn basic concepts of nature photography to include creating dynamic compositions, using available light to maximum benefit, controlling depth of field and using filters in the field.  Everyone in the workshop will also participate in a fun and educational mid-day group image critique, which is consistently one of the most popular aspects of the Boot Camp.  Join me June 15 in the Tetons, or July 13 & August 10 in Moab for one of these great workshops.

If you’re a veteran photographer of the Moab landscape, you’ve already got images of all the iconic locations in your portfolio.  Now it’s time to branch out by exploring a few off-the-beaten path locations that are every bit as impressive as the hot spots – but without the crowds.  Join me May 25 & 26 for the Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour and we’ll spend two full days accessing several spectacular locations via rough four-wheel drive roads and arduous hikes.  You’ll be rewarded with solitude and gorgeous images of waterfalls in slot canyons, jaw dropping canyon views, towering sandstone spires and remote arches – none of which are on the radar of most tourists to Moab.  The only catch: you’ve got to be physically fit and able to carry all of your camera gear over rough terrain for up to nine miles.  The Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour is limited to 3 participants and I’ve only got two spots left.

To learn more about or to register for the Nature Photography Boot Camp or Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour, please visit the workshops page on my website.  I hope to have the opportunity to work with a few of you at one of these events!

2012 Nature Photography Workshops and Tours

At long last, I have finalized the dates and details of my photography workshops and tours for the first half of 2012.  I’m a little late this year and for that I apologize.  Time got away from me and before I knew it the end of the year was almost here.  So, what do I have planned?  Read on to learn more.

Undiscovered Moab: A Photo Tour
April 21 & 22, 2012
Moab, Utah

Most photographers associate Moab with the famous scenes found within Arches and Canyonlands National Parks – Delicate Arch, Mesa Arch and Balanced Rock. While these oft-photographed icons are certainly worthy of the attention, the Moab area is home to dozens of virtually unknown locations just waiting to be discovered by intrepid photographers. Join me on an Undiscovered Moab Photo Tour and we’ll spend two full days exploring some of the most stunning scenery you’ve never seen.

Each day will start before sunrise and won’t end until after sunset. We’ll access several spectacular locations via rough but scenic four wheel drive roads and we’ll likely put a few more miles on your hiking boots. Weather and conditions will dictate which locations we’re able to visit but could include remote sandstone towers, vast canyon views, beautifully sculpted wind caves, graceful sand dunes and beautiful but rarely visited arches. We may even hike 9 miles (round trip, in and out of a creek) to a twin waterfall hidden in a slot canyon!

Undiscovered Moab: A Photo Tour is limited to 3 participants.  Interest is high and this tour will sell out quickly.  Please visit the Moab Photo Workshops website to learn more or to register for this exciting event.

Nature Photography Boot Camp
May 5, 2012 & June 2, 2012 (Additional dates to be added throughout the year)
Moab, Utah (I may add a date in Grand Teton NP in August, too)

In this intensive, one-day workshop we’ll visit at least three stunning locations around Moab to photograph Canyon Country in the warm light of sunrise and sunset. In the field we’ll focus on creating dynamic compositions, using camera settings to maximize creativity and using available light to craft your images. We’ll also spend some time talking about gear for outdoor photography and experimenting with polarizing and graduated neutral density filters. These workshops are very casual and participants are encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with one another.

After the morning shoot we’ll break for a late breakfast/early lunch at a local diner. There we’ll review a few of my prints and I’ll discuss what went into making each image from a creative and technical standpoint. Each participant will then share a few of their own images for an interactive critique session. These images can be part of a digital portfolio on an iPad/laptop or hard copy prints. I am often told that this is a favorite part of the workshop. It’s also one of the most beneficial as I feel strongly that having your work critiqued and critiquing the work of others is a hugely important part of the creative process.

My Nature Photography Boot Camp workshops were featured as one of the “16 Best Summer Attractions for Families” in the June 2011 issue of Budget Travel magazine.  The response was phenomenal and last year every workshop filled quickly, with several people on cancellation waiting lists.  Please visit the Moab Photo Workshops website to learn more or to register for one of the fun and informative Boot Camp workshops.

There you have it, folks. I hope you find something that interests you.  As always, please don’t hesitate to call (602.571.4170) or email me with questions about any of these workshops.  See you in 2012!

2011 Workshop Schedule Announced

At long last, my 2011 photography workshop schedule has been announced.  Have a look at the summaries below and if you find something of interest you can get all the details on the Moab Photo Workshops website.

This year I’m bringing back the super popular one-day “Nature Photography Boot Camp” workshops in Moab.  I’m offering three dates this time around and have switched up the format a bit to make it even more useful, more intensive and more fun for all who attend.  If you’re short on time but want to learn as much as possible in just one day, this is the event for you.  We’ll photograph sunrise and sunset, do image critiques and engage in a fun, interactive Q & A where no question is too elementary.  Oh, and don’t worry – there won’t be any drill instructors yelling in your face and no mandatory push-ups!

Nat Coalson and I are teaming up again to offer another photo workshop in one of my all-time favorite places, Grand Teton National Park.  This year, we’ve moved the workshop to fall to take advantage of colorful aspen leaves and generally better weather.  We’ve also partnered with the fabulous Hotel Terra in Jackson Hole to offer generous room discounts to our workshop clients.  All classroom sessions will be held in the elegant Craighead meeting room at Hotel Terra.  We’ll photograph three sunrises and three sunsets during our time together, and in the classroom we’ll focus on streamlining your digital darkroom workflow.  Plenty of image critiques throughout the workshop help to solidify the concepts we’ll discuss.

Todd Caudle and I are at it again with a winter workshop among the red rock landscape in Moab, Utah.  We’ll photograph sunrises and sunsets in Arches & Canyonlands National Parks and Dead Horse Point State Park.  While in the field Todd and I will offer lots of instruction to help you better understand the image making process from both a technical and creative standpoint.  We’ll also do lots of image critiques in the field and in the classroom.  Speaking of classroom, we’ve got a comfortable meeting room reserved for two instructional sessions where we’ll work through the processing of several images from workshop participants.  We’ll have an Epson Stylus R2880 printer on hand with lots of fine art paper from the good folks at Moab Paper and everyone will return home with a 12″ x 18″ print from their time in Canyon Country.

And finally, a reminder: I offer private guided photo excursions in Moab and the Tetons throughout the year.  Contact me to learn more.  Interested in a workshop or guided tour?  Wanna hear what past clients have to say about them?  Check out the testimonials on my “Happy Clients” page.

I hope to see you at a workshop or on a guided photo tour in 2011!
